Dear VA-Hist subscribers, On Friday, November 18, at noon, A. Roger Ekirch will discuss his book, At Day's Close: Night in Times Past, at the Library of Virginia. The talk will be followed by a book signing sponsored by the Virginia Shop, where copies of the book are now available. Dr. Ekirch is a Professor of History at Virginia Tech, an award-winning author, and a former Guggenheim Fellow. At Day's Close, which spans literature, psychology, and social and intellectual history, is a compelling study of the darker side of human history before modern lighting illuminated the night. Nighttime brought a new set of rules, offering people freedom from their daily lives but at the same time bringing forth crime, fire, anxiety and evil spirits. Dr. Ekirch will share stories from his extensive archival research on this fascinating subject.
