Dear VA-Histers, This is a reminder that tomorrow, Thursday, October 27, at noon, Fitzhugh Brundage will be at the Library of Virginia for a discussion of his new book, The Southern Past: A Clash of Race and Memory. The talk, to be held in the Library's conference rooms, will be followed by a book signing sponsored by the Virginia Shop, where copies of the book are now available. Dr. Brundage is the William B. Umstead Professor of History at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His book examines the struggles over the meanings and uses of the Southern past, especially between whites and blacks. Today's controversies over flying the Confederate flag, renaming schools and streets, and commemorating the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement are only the latest examples of this ongoing divisive contest over issues of regional identity and heritage. Brundage argues that these battles are ultimately about who has the power to determine what we remember of the past, and whether that remembrance will honor all Southerners or only select groups. Our booktalk series continues next month with Roger Ekirch, Professor of Early American History at Virginia Tech, who will discuss and sign At Day's Close: Night in Times Past, a meticulously researched book that has drawn considerable critical acclaim.
