The Virginia Foundation for the Humanities seeks a Managing Editor and an Associate Editor for the new Online Virginia Encyclopedia. The Encyclopedia, to be developed section by section over a period of years, will become an authoritative first point of reference for persons seeking information on a wide range of topics related to Virginia. The Encyclopedia will include both thematic essays and shorter entries, each supplemented by materials such as images, maps, primary sources, sound and video clips, and teacher resources. The Managing Editor will establish an achievable production schedule and oversee day-to-day operations, including supervision of staff, to meet production targets. The Managing Editor will develop and maintain editorial, publishing, and digital procedures and specifications for the Encyclopedia and will coordinate the work of multiple staff and vendors in all facets of this large and complex project. Strong management, communication, budgetary, computer, and digital production skills are essential for this position. Familiarity with content management systems and experience with online projects are preferred. The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding, knowledge, and appreciation of the humanities and familiarity with Virginia's history and culture. Master's degree in humanities discipline preferred; Bachelor's degree and significant relevant experience may be considered in lieu of advanced degree. This is a General Faculty, non-tenure track position. The Associate Editor will manage the development of content for the Encyclopedia, working closely with section editors and contract entry writers to produce authoritative and accurate content on a wide range of subjects. The Associate Editor will supervise the workflow of each entry from its assignment to writers to its uploading online. Strong research and writing skills and strong computer skills, including familiarity with web development and content management systems, are essential for this position. The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding, knowledge, and appreciation of the humanities and familiarity with Virginia’s history and culture.
