Of pounds and impoundings:

One of the legal/institutional inheritances from England was the office of "reeve" (which most familiarly gives us the sheriff -- shire-reeve), but also gave us "cattle reeves" and "hog reeves" and probably other overseers of livestock as well.  Something about this might be in Philip A. Bruce's old and useful volumes; but I don't have a copy, so no promises!
