I have been working with old documents (some of them music of the 19th VA Hvy Arty Band), trying to clean them up -- get rid of smudges and artifacts of the years. I have a couple of pieces of software which greatly help, but it is still a laborious process, almost like have a little vacuum-cleaner nozzle and running it over the stuff I want to take out, being careful not to suck up the real stuff.

Do REAL librarians/researchers have any software that helps with this? Maybe generates..... choke.... gasp...... Fourier Transforms, so that one might filter out high-frequency noise? And if so, will the software fit my budget? Under $100.
