Vacancy: Archaeologist Position No: 762007 Department: Planning Office Location: Woodbridge, VA Grade: 15 Salary: 46,788.04 - 74,861.02 On-line Date: 3/2/2005 - 3/16/2005 Entry Salary Range: 46,788.04 - 50,999.00 Permanent Full Time Duties: Performs professional work identifying, surveying, evaluating, and recording archaeological resources. Develops and maintains standards for archaeological assessments. Reviews public and private development proposals for potential impacts to archaeological resources and works with developers, engineers, construction contractors and utility companies to negotiate a balance between development plans/activities and archaeolgical resources. Recommends mitigation of archaeological resources and proffers as appropriate. Reviews and negotiates scope of work for archaeological studies, monitors archaeological field work and reviews archaeological reports for compliance with county standards. Work is performed under the general supervision of the cultural resources coordinator. Other tasks include: developing and implementing policies, procedures and ordinances related to archaeology; reviews rezonings, special use permits, public facility applications and checks records and maps to determine level of archaeological monitoring required; coordinates with the Historical Commission on recommendations for archaeological work. Conducts meetings, makes public presentations, and responds to inquiries. Prepares written comments on archaeological reports. Develops volunteer archaeology programs. Trains and supervises student interns and volunteers. Prepares technical reports on archaeological theory. Coordinates with the Department of Public Works in the cataloging and storage of artifacts. Knowledge, Skills, and Responsibilities: General knowledge of the principles and policies of archaeology and the ability to apply them; general knowledge of the techniques of report writing; ability to manage multiple projects and shift priorities as needed; ability to evaluate the work of archaeological contractors; ability to prepare and produce detailed written reports and studies; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with specialty consultants such as archaeologists, engineers, historians, county employees and the general public; ability to plan, develop and implement research projects from start to finish; ability to perform duties and responsibilities independently within established policies and procedures. Education and Experience: A Bachelor's Degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field, and 3-5 years experience in conducting archaeological studies and historical research with emphasis on Virginia history. Requires a strong foundation of knowledge in American history. Special Requirements: Must possess a valid driver's license. Must pass DMV record check. Preferences: Master of Arts in history, anthropology or closely related field; member of Register of Professional Archaeologists.
