Funded by the National Historical Preservation and Records Commission (NHPRC) for three years, the incumbent will lead the VCU Libraries in reaching out to Central Virginia’s African-American, Hispanic, Women’s Activist and Gay and Lesbian communities to collect the records of their communities. The VCU Libraries seeks an energetic, knowledgeable and creative archivist to advance this initiative in conjunction with the Project Director, two Archival Assistants and four volunteer liaisons as part of the Archives of the New Dominion initiative. By building an active, culturally and academically diverse faculty of the highest caliber, the VCU Libraries strengthens its strong commitment to the diverse faculty, student, and resident community of VCU and Central Virginia. *RESPONSIBILITIES:* Reporting to the Head of Special Collections and Archives at the James Branch Cabell Library, the successful candidate will work with volunteer liaisons from each of the four targeted communities to gather information on prospective organizations and individuals, establish contact with them, determine the scope of their work, survey their documentary records and products, and speak with them about the importance of documenting their work and making it available through an archival repository. The incumbent also will help create brochures targeting each community and help develop written standards for the cultural documentation of non-profit organizations. Supervises .5 FTE Archival Assistant. *QUALIFICATIONS:* *Required:* ALA-accredited graduate degree or accredited graduate degree in history or related field. *Highly Preferred:* Two years professional experience in an archival repository. Experience working with a culturally diverse group of organizations and individuals. A strong knowledge of archival practices and theory and experience with records appraisal. A strong commitment to the documentation of social history. *Preferred:* A demonstrated ability to organize material, time, and data. Excellent oral, written and telephone communication skills. Familiarity with standard database and archival metadata standards. Initiative, creativity, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Knowledge of written and spoken Spanish.
