Listers - in our research, a lot of girls named Mary become Polly, and
Elizabeths become Elizas, or Betsys. There were also nicknames like
Nellies for Eleanors, Nancy for Annes, and Megs or Peggys for Margarets.
Of course, in the 19th and 20th century people also named and are still
naming their children nicknames instead of the more formal root name like
Jack instead of John, or Meg instead of Margaret.
