At the request of the archivists, I am happy to post this announcement: The Library of Virginia is pleased to announce the availability of the Virginia Electric and Power Company records. The files span from 1849-ca. 1995 and include the companies' general counsel/vice president files including his correspondence, corporate legal files, corporate financial files, personnel files, company annual Reports, and Jamestown Exposition files. There are also records pertaining to the company's treasurer consisting of customer accounts and dividend and stock accounts. The remainder of the collection constitutes VEPCO Relief Association files, publications, right-of-way plats for Richmond and Chesapeake Railway lines in Richmond, Virginia, photographs, advertisements, scrapbooks, and memorabilia. Relief Association files consist of certificates of attending physicians denoting service rendered to members of the Virginia Railway and Power Company Relief Association for injury or illness. These certificates contain information including member's name and job position, physician's name, and illness or injury. Advertisements are chiefly publicity broadsides created by VEPCO and VEPCO's advertising contractor Cargill, Wilson and Acree for publication as posters and in newspapers, magazines, and other printed material. These advertisements generally promote the expanded use of electrical household appliances, the purchase of electrically operated homes, and the conversion to electrical agricultural equipment by farmers.
