Readers on this list interested in Virginia political history might find
a new book on a century of Loudoun County political history a worthy
addition to their research shelf. Wynne C. Saffer_Loudoun Votes,
1867-1966: A Civil War Legacy_ contains a fine narrative explaining the
elections throughout that period along with some maps and several
pictures of state and local political figures. The overarching,
remarkably consistent, pattern of partisan alignment was, of course, the
one that hardened in the Civil War. In addition, the book has a highly
valuable appendix that lists election statistics, by magisterial
district and precinct, for all federal and state elections during that
century. So, if you want to see how the Readjusters fared in a Northern
Piedmont county or watch the Byrd machine crush its adveraries, you can
find the micro level data here. The book is available at the Thomas
Balch Library in Leesburg and online at: www.Willowbendbooks.com.
