Call for Papers: The History Graudate Student Association at Virginia Tech is organizing the 6th annual Brian Bertoti "Innovative Perspectives in History" Conference, April 4-5, 2003, on the campus of Virginia Tech. Graduate students and advanced undergraduate students from all disciplines are encouraged to submit papers that contribute to the conference's theme of "innovative perspectives." We welcome papers dealing with various topics, including: United States/Canada/Latin America Europe/Russia Africa/Middle East Asia/Australia/Pacific Studies Topics within these fields can include, but are not limited to, transatlantic studies; race, class, and gender studies; global studies; comparative studies; digital history projects; and science and technology studies. We welcome papers from other disciplines besides history, including geography, anthropology, area studies, political science, sociology, and literature. *A prize of $100 will be awarded to the best paper presented at the conference. Guest Speakers: Keynote speaker- Dr. Ruth Schwartz Cowan, professor of the history and sociology of Science at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Cowan is the author of "A Social History of Technology" and "More Work for Mother: The Ironies of Household Technology from the Open Hearth to the Microwave." Luncheon speaker- Dr. Grace Elizabeth Hale, associate professor of history at the University of Virginia. Dr. Hale is the author of "Making Whiteness: The Culture of Segregation in the South, 1890-1940."
