Have you tried the William & Mary Quarterly online?
It is such an excellent source for tid-bits like the one you're looking for.
Just go their web site and type in Cabell's full name under search. I'll
bet there is something about him there, somewhere.
I'm on my way out of town otherwise I'd do a quick search for you and let
you know if there is anything.
I have a year's subscription which costs about $50.00 p/a and is obtained
through an organization called JSTOR. It really is worth the money to
subscribe.
You get access , online, to every issue through the 1990's (or thereabout).

Somewhere in the cobwebs of my brain, I recall hearing that between helping
Mr. Jefferson with THE University, and frittering away his time (at least
according to some sources:)) on the James River Kanawha Canal, Cabell went
to China or Japan. But I cannot find anything to substantiate that memory.
Is there a bio of the gentleman, or perhaps a publication coming from his
purported trip?
