According to the Dictionary of Virginia Biography, Cabell traveled through Europe (England, Italy, France) between 1803 and 1806, but there is no mention of him going to Japan or China. The exerpt also cites Carol Minor Tanner's Dissertation, "Joseph C. Cabell, 1778-1856," (UVA, 1948) as an additional source of biographical information. I hope this is helpful.
See Dictionary of Virginia Biography, Vol. II, ed. Sara Bearss, et.al. (Richmond, 2001), pp. 488-490.

But I cannot find anything to substantiate that memory. Is there a bio of the gentleman, or perhaps a publication coming from his purported trip?
