This issue has been touched on before, I believe under the rubric, "What's
that in real money."  Local (VA) currency was in use, as was US.  The
practice of figuring purchases in pounds sterling continued well into the
19th c, depending on location.  Indeed, Rockbridge Co's subpoenae continued
to list possible fines for no shows at 100 pounds.
