The Alexandria Library, Special Collections has launched a new web site titled, “The Tax Assessor’s Handiwork: Alexandria’s Historic Structures Online.” These are digital files in the .pdf format of a special tax assessment that was prepared in the late 1960s on roughly 6000 properties in the Old and Historic District of Alexandria, VA. This web site is part of a Library project in cooperation with the City of Alexandria Archives and Records Center and is funded in part with a 2002 LSTA EZ Mini Grant from the Library of Virginia. The content online thus far includes 300 of the project total of 2000 properties and will be added to as more material is digitized. It will take a few years, but we plan to digitize all 6000 records. The URL is www.alexandria.lib.va.us/lhsc_online_collection_guides/proprec/proptax.html please cut and paste into your brower’s web address window to access the site. As we are moving further along with the digitization process, we are coming across quite a number of records for properties that were subsequently razed. As focused as we are in Old Town Alexandria on the age of the buildings here, this project allows access to a large and significant resource and will be of interest to students of architectural and urban history as well as homeowners. -- Joyce A.
