Continental troops are encamped on the grounds of "Elim," the Honorable Henry Fry's manse situated between the banks of the Meander Run and the Robinson River in Culpeper County, Virginia. Major General the Marquis de Lafayette walks among them, offering encouragement. The fogs of time lift. The year is 2001. Continental troops again are encamped on the grounds of "Elim," now known as The Inn at Meander Plantation, situated between the banks of the Crooked Run and the Robinson River in Madison County, Virginia. No, it's not a time warp, but rather the Colonial/Revolutionary War encampment planned Nov. 10 and 11 at The Inn. The encampment will portray soldiers and their families associated with the troops of Major General the Marquis de Lafayette, Brigadier General John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg, Brigadier General Thomas Nelson and Brigadier General Anthony Wayne, who marched through and camped in Culpeper in the vicinity of Elim in June 1781. It also celebrates the 275th anniversary of the patenting in 1726 of Elim, making it the first property patented in Madison County. The event is open to the public, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, and 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 11. Admission will be $7 for adults and children age 12 and up, $3 for children ages 5-11, and free for children under age 5. Living history interpreters, both civilian and military, crafters, sutlers, vendors and historical organizations will recreate a portrait of life from the late 1700s. Participating organizations include the Brandywine Battlefield Park Associates from Brandywine, PA; the Rappahannock Colonial Heritage Society from Fredericksburg, the 3rd Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line from Culpeper and the Fredericksburg Militia. Directing organization of the first annual event is Jay Harrison of Orange, who has participated for many years in such events as a member of the 6th North Carolina Continental Line Regiment. Events will begin Saturday with a parade of the military troops through the front gate at Meander ("Elim") and a review of the troops by the civilians and interpreters in attendance. On-going activities throughout the two days will include: Military drills with accompanying musket and cannon firings; Campfire baking and cooking demonstrations; Fashion shows of civilian and military attire; Vignettes of Colonial life in rooms of the manor; Colonial dance classes; Gentlemen's games and entertainment in the manor tavern; Cooking demonstrations and interpretations in the Elim summer kitchen; Colonial children's games on the manor grounds; Domestic skills demonstrations by crafters; Theatre troupe performances; Tomahawk throwing; Flint and Steel fire starting. Recording artist Sally Jane Denk, known as "The Bard of the Brandywine," will be performing throughout the day, and the Brandywine Battlefield Park Museum Shop will have a display, as well as items for sale. Other local historical organizations will be on hand to distribute information and answer questions. Sunday morning activities will be preceded by a Colonial church service, open to the public, at 9:30 a.m. Refreshments and parking will be available for an additional charge.
