Reference Services at the Library of Virginia is pleased to announce the publication of two new library resource guides, Researching Virginia Place Names (http://www.lva.lib.va.us/pubserv/reference/virginia_place_name_research.htm ) and "Indian Virginians" - A Resource Guide (http://www.lva.lib.va.us/pubserv/reference/indian_virginians.htm). . The investigation of an intriguing or perhaps defunct place name is a frequent topic for researchers at the Library of Virginia (LVA). Whether they are trying to find the location of a place to determine where to look for genealogical records or are interested in the origin of a place name, they can find the search frustrating as place names have many variations and may change or disappear over time. Although no single comprehensive, time-inclusive dictionary of Virginia places exists, LVA has a wide collection of published resources on this subject as well as an extensive collection of current and historical Virginia maps. Gail Tatum of the Library Reference Services staff has prepared a research guide, Researching Virginia Place Names(http://www.lva.lib.va.us/pubserv/reference/virginia_place_name_researc h.htm) , listing and annotating the major research sources for such a project and outlining search terms and strategies for further examination. William C. Luebke of the Reference Services staff has recently completed the extensive "Indian Virginians" - A Resource Guide (http://www.lva.lib.va.us/pubserv/reference/indian_virginians.htm). This publication provides descriptive annotations for many resources for information and research from the published holdings of LVA, to museum exhibits throughout the commonwealth, to sites on the World Wide Web. The principal part of this resource guide is a selected bibliography of published materials held at the Library of Virginia. Concluding the guide are sections devoted to the eight recognized Indian tribes of Virginia, to selected museums with Virginia Indian-related displays, and to pertinent Internet sites and portals. The publication of this research guide complements and completes the review of Library of Virginia archival materials, "Resources on Native Americans at the Library of Virginia" by Patricia Watkinson of the Archives Research Services staff. These and other Reference Services handouts may be found by looking in the index of the Library of Virginia home page (www.lva.lib.va.us) for Bibliographies for Virginia Research (http://www.lva.lib.va.us/pubserv/reference/bibliogr.htm).
