John Schroeder asked about the origins of Quaker opposition to slavery.

The classic account, at least it was many years ago when I read it, is
Thomas Edward Drake, Quakers and Slavery in America (Yale University Press,
1950).

A more recent book on the subject, which I probably ought to read, is Jean
R. Soderlund, Quakers and Slavery: A Divided Spirit (Princeton University
Press, 1985).
