A representative from the Independence National Historical Park, Doris Devine Fanelli, Chief of Cultural Resources Management, contacted me after reading my post regarding the status of the icehouse at the Presidential Mansion in Philadelphia. According to Ms. Fanelli, the Park Service has no plans to destroy the icehouse but rather preserve it in situ. This is good news, of course. Ms. Fanelli writes: "We're not destroying Washington's house. That was already accomplished years ago before this site became federal property. We discovered the remains of an ice house on the property during the course of investigations prior to construction. The ice house will be preserved in situ and nominated to the National Register." Also, the Philadelphia article cited contains at least one inaccuracy: Jed Levin works for the National Park Service, not for John Milner (JMA). -- Frank E.
