I agree with Paul--it must be misspelled. The only thing close that makes
sense is "dunning debts"--pressing for money that is owed. The definitive
work, anyhow, on Jefferson and debt is Herbert E. Sloan, Principle and
Interest: Thomas Jefferson and the Problem of Debt.
