I'm a graduate student, researching capital punishment in Tennessee from
1877 to 1941. I'm ran across a newspaper article from October 1895 that
creates a problem. The Nashville Semi-Weekly American of October 14, 1895
describes the execution of Kit Leftwich, a black man, at Bristol. While
the article does a fine job of describing the circumstances of the
execution, it omits a basic fact: Bristol, TN or Bristol VA?

I've checked the resources available to me (Watt Espy's execution database,
as well as the web-enabled sources on Virginia executions). Could anyone
tell me if this execution occurred under Virginia or Tennessee statute?

I appreciate any assistance.
