A mulatto family I descended from in Albemarle County had some stay and others leave for Ohio in the 1820s. The ones that stayed had to register yearly in the County

Most of the free blacks I have studied in Cumberland County did not want to
leave and just stayed in place after being freed.  One that I know of
voluntarily went to Ohio.  I think in general it is safe to say they wanted
to stay in the home they knew.
