Thanks, Carolyn.  Where did you learn about the Palatines?  Is there more
about them?  I have relatives from there and my husband has more than I do.

Madaline, if your Shenandoah family settlers were Germans, as many were,
they may have suffered through the extreme cold I mentioned in the other
post. The Palatines were especially hard hit because their lands were so
coveted by the French and the Germans (Hessians, Hanoverians, etc.) that
they fought over the area time and again for generations, forcing the locals
out into the extreme weather every time, often with nothing but the clothes
on their backs.
