Pat, Carolyn is right.

I have an ancestor who went from NJ to Anson, NC. How? I have no idea. He
did not go into the French and Indian War until he was already in NC so it
was not bounty land.
Then I have another man who went from Augusta Co., VA to the central part of
SC. How? I do not know but I have followed the name and the dower release.
It works perfectly.
What threw me was that old books, accounts of the two men said they were
friends before both went to W. FL. One is in W FL by 1772 and the other, his
friend, came that year to "look it over", went back to SC and then did not
return until 10 years later. But came to the same area, Natchez with a huge
family, slaves, livestock, etc. And he came via waterways!!
When I got out old maps of NC and SC, I could see that the ONLY way someone
could get to the sea from Anson Co. NC was to take the rivers through SC to
Charles Towne. And guess what, the man from VA's land was right on the
water way that the man from NC would have taken.
So a HUGE YES, follow the waterways!!

Gale

Pat, check the waterways, too... maybe first.
