Organ Cave in Greenbrier County of southeastern West Virginia (and therefore western Virginia until June 20, 1863) was a source of nitre for making saltpeter. Troops under General Lee mined and processed there.
It is said to have the nation's largest collection of Civil War period saltpeter hoppers and also has some from the War of 1812. The site is on the National Register of Historic Places and also is a National Natural Landmark for its extensive cave system. It has been the source of significant paleontological discoveries.
