Continuing on contributions to the above questions...

I am a genealogy researcher, now limited only to Fluvanna County, VA due to arthritis.  I work with the Clerk and respond to all genealogy requests that come to their office.  I do this on my own, explaining what I will do, what the minimum cost will be and they may limit my research to that amount.  I am finding that:
1.  the majority of the requesters don't even bother to include a SASE.
2.  the only ones who will respond (and all of them don't use me after we correspond) are only needing documentation to satisfy requirements for a heritage or other society.
3.  I also volunteer on two sites for a very limited lookup.  I rarely get a thanks or any other message except asking for more!

I am confident this trend has gone hand in hand with the plethora of undocumented stuff that is available on the www.  So, to answer your question...I think "genealogy" has suffered and "fill in the name puzzzles" have taken over...JMHO.
