Vince,

Below is some information. I have source documentation for it.

I would appreciate whatever you are willing to share on James and Ida
(Dawson) Bland and son Isaac. Studying all family members helps to fill out
our knowledge and sometimes solves mysteries.

My husband's James Madison Bland is in James' household in 1850 and 1860
(see census listings below). James M. Bland served as a Confederate in the
Civil War enlisting from Giles Co. VA in Company I, 36 Regiment VA Infantry.
(Something NARA sent my husband's cousin Gary in 1977 regarding James'
military service said James was born in Giles Co. VA and died 30 April 1896
in Choate Prairie, Oklahoma (which in 1896 was Choate Prairie, Choctaw
Nation, Indian Territory). Also, when James M. Bland was paroled by the Head
Quarters First Separate Brigade, Department of West Virginia, as a prisoner
of war on 23 June 1865, he was 21 years old. Sometime after the war, James
moved to Washington Co. VA where he married Elizabeth Cubine 11 August 1867.
I've ordered the marriage records, but until I get them, I have to go by
what the marriage abstract says.

The abstract of James' 11 August 1865 Washington County marriage record
names James M. Bland's parents as James R. and Virginia Bland. Remember, he
is in James and Ida's household in 1850 and 1860, and Ida is young enough to
have had a late in life son in 1844. So the marriage abstract leaves me with
these, among other, questions. Did James have a middle initial of R? Was Ida
named Virginia Ida or Ida Virginia? (Many people have more than one given
name.) If not, did James have a son named James R. Bland? Is James M. Bland
a grandson of James and Ida, or ???

Notice that in 1860, other children join James and Ida's household. Too bad
the census takers didn't write in the relationship to head of household. In
any case, James appears to take good care of his family members.

The marriage information abstracted from the Washington Co. marriage record
for James M. Bland says he was born in Bland Co. VA. However, James was born
in March 1844 and Bland Co. wasn't formed until 1861. The NARA item said so
he was born in Giles Co., so it seems logical that he was probably born in a
part of Giles Co. that became Bland Co. The abstract also names Elizabeth's
parents as William and Nancy Cubine of Washington Co. VA. They are in the
1850 and 1860 Washington Co. federal censuses with their children. Some of
Elizabeth's siblings also moved to Montague County TX, where James and
Elizabeth Bland and family are in 1880.

While I've given you the marriage abstract information that was given to me,
I won't know if the marriage abstract contains any errors until I get a copy
of the original record. Books sometimes do contain errors.

James M. and Elizabeth (Cubine) Bland had several children in VA and, as I
mentioned, by 1880 were in Montague Co. TX, where they had a 1-year old born
in TX. In 1881, they had another son. Sometime after 1881 and by 1884,
Elizabeth died and James remarried 15 May 1884 in Sebastian Co. AR to Martha
Jane Cantley (dau. of James Cantley and Saline/Salina Jones). They had their
three children in Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory in 1886, 1887, and 1890.
Martha died about 1892 in Savannah, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. James
remarried, this time to Mrs. E. C. Starr 6 Aug. 1893. James died in 1896 of
TB, but I have not found a record of what happened to Mrs. E. C. Starr.
Anyhow, she drops out of the picture. Family word is that they probably
divorced. The minor children went to different households, but I have not
yet found a court record dealing with them in the Indian Territory records.
One household was that of an uncle William Mayberry/Mabry (I have yet to
learn how William is their uncle, but he also stood as surety for James'
marriage to Mrs. E. C. Starr.

James M. Bland became a minister 12 June 1892 at the Herman Baptist Church,
Indianola P. O., Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory (now OK). I have a
photocopy of his Official Credentials.

Some of James' older children by Elizabeth Cubine apparently also married in
C.N., I.T., based on the names and ages I've seen. These children were 1/2
siblings to Martha Jane Cantley's children.

Martha Jane Cantley's father was James Cantley (b. 1832/3 AR). James
Cantley’s father was James Cantley (b. 1794 VA). Below is an excerpt about
the Cantleys from an e-mail that Mary Moffat, another researcher, sent me on
the Sebastian County AR message board. To read the entire message, see
http://genforum.genealogy.com/cantley/messages/214.html.

"James was the son of James Cantley b. 1794, Greenbrier Co., Virginia, d. 14
Sep 1861, Hempstead Co., Arkansas and Sarah Best b. 1800, Kentucky, d. abt
1868, Hempstead Co., Arkansas. James and Sarah had nine children: William,
b. 1818, Missouri, d. 18 Nov 1879, Nevada Co., Arkansas; Isaac b. 1824,
Missouri, d. abt 1865; John b. 1820, Missouri, d. bef 1880; Setphen b. 1826,
Texas, d. 11 Jan 1862 in the Civil War; Martha G. b. 1828, d. bef 1860;
James b. 1832, Arkansas, d. bef 1900, Sebastian Co., Arkansas (as above);
Casandra b. 1836, Arkansas, Eliza A. b. 1838, Arkansas and Ebenezer b. 1842,
Arkansas.

James Cantley (1794 the father) was the son of John Cantley, Jr. b. 1765,
Virginia, d. abt 1835, Franklin Co., Missouri and Jane Kincaid b. 1768,
Virginia, d. in Franklin Co., Missouri. John and Jane's other children were
John Cantley III and Samuel Cantley (my 3rd great grandfather).

Incidently, Sarah Best (wife of the elder James) was the sister of Rebecca
Best my 3rd great grandmother, wife of Samuel Cantley. The two brothers
married two sisters as frequently happened in those days. It makes tracing a
bit more difficult since they also frequently gave their children similar or
even the same names."

I know very little about Mrs. E. C. Starr.

Please note that I have not included all census information that I have on
these lines.

Lee Anne
