Thanks; I suspect your indication that it is a punch bowl comes closer to the meaning now.  I do wonder what Dr. Samuel Johnson would have stated that a punch bowl would then have been the same. 

Incidentally, I have seen no inventory of the 17th or 18th century that mentions "punch bowl".  Does anybody know of such a reference
