June 26, 1781- 49 members of the Botetourt Rifles (Militia) who served earlier that year in N.C.under Maj. Thomas Rowland, sign a petition setting forth reasons for their returning home early from Gen. Greene’s forces in hopes the governor will over-rule a court martial decision, and allow them a "tour of duty".

Q 1- Aside from saving their reputations, what benefits --if any-- did they expect to receive if the request for a tour was agreed to by the governor?

Q 2- Signatures on the petition are impossible to read due to damage to the document. Any suggestions regarding identifying these men?

Thanks for reading this and for any help you can provide.

Joanne
