I pasted a list of the soldiers who fought in the Second Virginia Calvary to this message. There may be someone out there whose ancestor is on the list. The unit was multi racial with many Natives and Whites, and a few Free Blacks. My ancestors who served were Native, and resided in Amherst County.

The article, and roster is housed in the New York Historical Society; and the official Amherst County Militia Roster is part of , Col. William Cabells', papers which are housed in the College of William & Mary's, Swem Library.
Thursday, May 22, 1884 - “In every war there are, and have always been, thousands of privates who suffered or bled or died after patriotic sacrifice and great individual deeds, whose names as soldiers are unknown outside the narrow circle of the humble family. Often these men had nothing to fight for, yet they periled life and limb and often lost, for their cause, their flag. Our late civil war hand many such, our first Revolutionary fields were covered with them.
Soon those so near us will be forgotten as the Revolutionary-great, unrecognized, have been. The old County of Amherst, then comprising Amherst and Nelson, furnished many men to face disease and death in the Revolutionary War, and they came willingly, were patriots-refused pay by British gold and place and pay, and any one who gathers the names of such patriots in any war, does a high, patriotic deed.
Mr. Alexander Brown, of Norwood, Nelson County, has given much of his time to such labor among old Virginia to make a list, of the soldiers of the Revolution from Amherst County. We recognize many names familiar in the Counties of Amherst, Nelson, Buckingham and Appomattox, among them the great-grandfather of the writer, “John Whitehead,” who served in the cavalry battalion of a Major Cabell.
We have in this list seen the almost exact names of men who served with and under us in the Second Virginia Calvary, and they will be pleased to find their ancestry in the same service. At any rate we shall have put these old soldiers in front for the first time.

Amherst County Militia Roster (1)

The names of my ancestors on this list were, Rawley Pinn (Penn), John Redcross, and Benjamin Evans. Many of the Native Soldiers Descendants reside in Amherst and Nelson County and are members of the United Cherokee Indian Tribe and the Monacan Indian Tribe. The Amherst County DAR compiled the soldiers name, and made it available to libraries. The names of the soldiers are also listed in, The Cabell's and their kin, and in numerous books on Amherst County. In other words the names of this unit are readily available.

I am not saying that none of the soldiers names are on the database at Yorktown. However, I was told that the database did not contain the names of Rawley Pinn, John Redcross, nor Benjamin Evans. I also asked about Robert Pinn (Rawley Pinn's brother), Billy Pinn, John Pinn, and Jim Pinn, who served in a different unit, out of Lancaster County. I was told that their names are not in the database. According to one historian at Yorktown the name of a soldier cannot be put in the database unless they applied for a pension.

If there are any questions about individual soldiers, please email me privately.
