Just wanted to add that in trying to match the dates, times, deeds,
surnames, surveys, parishes & ever changing county lines, etc., with
whatever scraps of evidence we have on our ancestors - while the dates
General Assembly finally got around to setting those "official
boundaries" most often presented in "Lists of Virginia County Formation";
like everything else it was the growing resident population that formed
the parishes for their own convenience - often years and years before
that official Act of the General Assembly.
So don't despair if you are 120% positively sure your folks lived in a
certain spot along a certain river and discover the county or parish
"didn't exist" until a much later date. It didn't exist "officially"
until there were enough people whining to get it noticed. Your folks
likely didn't physically move anywhere, the counties/parishes simply
subdivided under their feet.
