  Anyone have a quick History for Dummies type explanation of whose side of
  what the 'Covenanters'  as referred to in Rev. Slaughter's paragraph
  below, were on?

  "...His grandfather was Robert Spotswood, Lord President of the College
  of Justice, ...executed by the Parliament of
  Scotland, which (according to Sir Walter Scott) consisted wholly of
  Covenanters.  "
