In case you are searching for a Civil War ancestor, the National Park Service has a great web site called the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System. The URL is

http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/

You can search for Union and Confederate soldiers and sailors by different categories. Categories include; for example, name, Union or Confederate, unit number or ordinal, function and state of origin. Hot links on the main page are Soldiers, Sailors, Regiments, Cemeteries, Battles, Prisoners, Medals of Honor, National Parks, National Park Service, Preserve, Exhibit, History, System Overview, Researcher's Toolbox, and Our Partners.
