For James Smith there are 2,923 entries and for James M. Smith there are 300 entries at footnote.com for Compiled Civil War Records.

What county did he live in? What county did his brother enlist in? That might narrow it down a bit.

A sub to footnote.com might be your best bet in finding him but from the numbers it might take a bit of time. The Compiled Service Records at footnote are from NARA.
