Johnson (1755 and 1802) defines the term "warden" as "a keeper", a "head
officer", and "a guardian". Albemarle Parish here was ordered by the court
to take charge of the child and "bind it out".

This "warden" (who regularly performed such tasks through his position in
the church hierarchy his office of the church) saw to it that the child was
placed in the home of a parishioner who would agree to such actions. The
child was bound for varying lengths of time and the conditions under which
he/she remained and worked for that that new guardian - "master" - again
varied depending upon all the circumstances if the matter.

I found the following in Surry County records:

"Oct. 1746 - Ordered that Church Warden of Albemarle Parish bind out
ETHELDRED baseborn son of Priscilla Bennett according to law."

I know that this means that Priscilla Bennett had an illegitimate child but
what, exactly, was happening with this court order?

Thanks for any information.
