On the Skyline Drive just South of Big Meadow there is a road marker for
Milam Gap.
My oldest known ancestor was Thomas Mylam (Milum) first found in present day
Madison
County in 1737. He purchased 400 acres on the north side of Double Top
Mountain along
The present day Rose River (then referred to as the South Branch of the
Robinson River).
My question has to do with the original location of Milam Gap. Margaret G.
Davis in her
revised version of Yowell's "Madison County, Virginia" (1937) refers to
"Milum (Fisher's) Gap"
as though they were one and the same. However, the present day marker for
Fisher's Gap is
separate and about 8 miles further north on the Skyline Drive.
Virginia Route 670, The Blue Ridge Turnpike, runs along the Rose River and
Mylam's former
property then dead ends in the Rose River Fire Road of the Shenandoah
National Park which winds it's
way up to present day Fisher's Gap. Taking into account the geography of
Mylam's property and
the roads and trails leading from it; it appears logical that Milam Gap and
Fisher's Gap were
historically indeed one and the same.
Is anyone familiar with the history of these Gaps or the placing of markers
on the Skyline Drive.
Is anyone other than myself actively researching further information on
Thomas Mylam (Milum).
For two year, I have been tediously reading through the Court Order Books
and Loose Papers
of Spotsylvania and Orange Counties at the Library of Virginia.
Any information or suggestions on where to look would be greatly
appreciated.
