Perhaps most of us can site stories regarding wrong records.
My step father-in-law spelled his surname Treadway. Other relatives in
his family spelled it Tredway. He often told the story that the clerk made a
spelling error on the certificate when his parents were married (circa
1900). They used the alternate spelling from that day forward.
I was surprised to find that my parents were not listed in marriage records
of our county. I knew the date of the marriage, the exact location and my
mother had a copy of the marriage certificate tucked away among her
belongings. When I inquired the reason they were not listed in the county
record, the explanation was that they likely never filed the document following
the wedding.

Peggy Clemens Lauritzen wrote a few minutes ago, "My sister was married
25 JUNE 1960. Just a few years ago, we were going through her belongings
and ran across her marriage certificate. It was clearly dated 25 JULY
1960!"
Mistakes in records certainly occur. Several years ago we got a
telephone call about 12:10 Christmas morning that my wife's mother had
been discovered dead when the staff of the nursing home where she lived
made midnight rounds. The odds are that she died between 11:00 p.m.
rounds and midnight 24 December, but by the time the medical attendant
got there and verified her death it was nearly 1:00 o'clock 25 December,
and that is the date on the death certificate.
