When I request a birth/death certificate, I always give the reason as
"To confirm date of birth/death." As for relationship, just state it.
Be advised however, that the state of Virginia has no birth/death
certificates prior to 1853. And except for a few cities, no birth/death
certificates between 1896 and 1912. Go back to their web site and read
