There is at least one New Castle in Scotland, but the better
known name Newcastle, in one word, can be found in County Down
(Northern Ireland) and in Shropshire and Monmouthshire. Newcastle
Emlyn is in Carmarthenshire. Newcastle Under Lyme (note the
spelling) is in Staffordshire and Newcastle Upon Tyne was in
Northumberland, as Richard Fulton said.

If you are certain your Newcastle/New Castle is in England, and
not in Ireland, Scotland or Wales, you have to take your pick
from Shropshire, Staffordshire and Durham - perhaps you have some
other evidence as to which it might be?

: There are two New Castle towns I am aware of. Both were
known by that
: name in the 1600's. The first and largest is New Castle upon
Tyne which
: is now located in County of Tyne and Wear on NE coast of
England between
: Northumberland and Durham. In the 1600's the Tyne River was
the border
: between Northumberland and Durham. New Castle is on the
Northumberland
: side.
:
: Also there is a New Castle upon Lyne located in present day NW
: Staffordshire. The area was also in Staffordshire in 1600
according to
: placement on Speeds Maps drawn at that time.
