Re proof of birth/death 1896:
About 15 years ago I obtained my mother's proof of birth from the City
of Roanoke Health Dept. She was born in 1906 at home which was in the
county at the time.
The application for the delayed birth certificate lists the usual name,
parents, color (race), date, parents' ages & birth place. It was signed
by her mother with her mother's address.
This was the proof offered as signed by the notary: The certificate
states that the family Bible examined by the notary was printed in 1892,
contains an unaltered record apparently made near the time showing the
birth of [redacted], and that the paper on which the record is written
is old and yellowed and the ink faded and shows evidence of great
age.The certificate was signed 12 Mar 1942.
by Pauline Whorley, Notary Public. [Coincidentally, Pauline was my
mother's first cousin.]
It is interesting that my mother had first traveled through Europe in
1930 and I have the passport. What would she have used used for proof
of citizenship at that time since presumably she had no birth certificate?
(And where was TSA at that time? SMILE]
Both of my parents applied for and obtained delayed birth certificates
in the early months of 1942. What with the US's recent entry into WW
II, did they suddenly feel the need for proof of citizenship?
