If you have the obit for his mother you can take it to the State Health Dept. in any large town in Alabama and they will get you a cert. of death, usually within the hour.
It will usually be filed under her married name. The cost is about $10.00 it will probably have her husbands name and the name of her parents, her date of birth and date of death with this info you should be able to come up with a lot of information about relatives ect that will give you a lot of clues to work. If you are not in Alabama you can order it over the internet but it is more expensive. If she died in another state you can search google for death certificates for that state.
