After years of research with immigrants with common names such as Griffith, Jones and Roberts, including during trips to Wales, I think you should be wary of any generalization concerning surnames and naming patterns in Wales.

I do think it is worthwhile to begin a search with the notion that some sons likely will carry both the fore- and the surname of the father and maternal grandfather.  It also seems to be a hint of kinship if a son bears the forename of a maternal grandfather.

Caution: Be careful with given names, e.g., the likes of "Toud", "Edwan" and "Benjey", often were slightly altered to such as "Todd", "Edward" ("Edwin") and "Ben" ("Benjamin"), after a few years of life in the American colonies.
