If you want access through Radford Public Library, make sure you go to the
**public library** and not the Radford University Library. Talk to the
public librarian named Brack (rhymes with "tack"). There's a conflict
between Heritage Quest and Norton Anti-Virus software. You won't be able to
access HQ until you've changed a setting or 2 in Norton. Just a minor
thing....you won't have to disable Norton. Brack can walk you through how
to do this. It's simple & he's very patient.

Radford Public Library also subscribes to the library version of
Ancestry.com. Brack says it has different items than the "public"
subscription. Unfortunately, the library version of Ancestry is only
available in the library...you can't access from home. But, you **can**
access HQ from home using your Radford Public Library card number.

Bottom line...If you live in the New River Valley, it's well worth your time
to go to the Radford Public Library, & sign up for a card. The librarians
there are "into" genealogy, know how to order microfilms for you, keep their
microfilm readers in working order, and are building a genealogy collection.

Sandy

Subject: Re: [VA-ROOTS] your local library is online

Here are a list of Libraries that offer HeritageQuest access from
your home computer using a library card that you acquire from them.
In the Tidewaterarea I learned from Steve that VA Beach offers it and
so does Portsmouth. Fairfax & Arlington would be good for
those in the DC area. Keep in mind that I'm sure there are more
than just what I've listed here. Hope this helps.
