Insured Slaves?! yep...and this book opens up a whole new world of Slave research.

Insurance policies from the slavery era have been discovered in the archives of several insurance companies...California Governor Davis signed SB2199 in Sep 2000, the stature took effect Jan 1 2001 to get the information from the insurance companies, the data was released a few weeks ago, and we put the book online an hour ago:

"Slavery Era Insurance Registry; A Database of Slaveholders in the States of AL, AR, GA, KY, LA, MO, MS, NC, SC, VA, and Washington DC, Who Insured Slaves As Property With Insurance Companies Licensed to do Business in California During the Slave Era." Includes slaveholder and insurance company names; and where known has place of residence, slave name and occupation and death date, and policy number. 200k text file.

Online the free-access no-ads non-profit WebRoots.org Library at http://www.webroots.org in our Black America Room.
