From my many years of research to-date, it appears that the surname CAVENDER, and all of its variant spellings, are descendants of the 12th century Irish King Donal Cavanah who first "adopted" the name as is personal surname, notwithstanding the fact his birth surname was Murray. Particularly following the defeat of Ireland by the British armies, all persons either took oath to the Protestant Church of England, or were killed or deported to other countries, including the American colonies. I am particularly interested in establishing a relationship between the Hugh Cavanah who departed the port of Bristol, England as a 16 year old lad to begin his service in Virginia to a Mr. Wills, and the particular Hugh Cavender, spelled various ways, who first appeard in Amelia County, Virginia as a "overseer" of a plantation, who later purchased a farm in Amelia County and began to start his family.
