Some Goings/Goynes/Goines/Gowens were thought to be of Portuguese descent
thus dark in color. Some were brought here from Nassau and the Caribbean
Islands as well as Portugal. This may well play a part in the "Free
Mixture" label. Indians and half white half blacks were referred to as
Mulatto and this is also a possibility. Some excellent reading on other
possible "Free Mixture" is located here:

"Melungeons and Other Mestee Groups."

Can someone shed light on? on what the rent rolls are, also called early
census records, I found this but not sure what it means, is this where
someone actually rented a home/land, could this be a sharecropper, in the
later census this person appears as White, but found a marriage certificate
and there is a Miles Hart allowing his daughter Elizabeth to be married to
Henry Goings, the couple are called Free Mixtures.. Is there an assumption
that Miles Hart could be a person of color and the 1810 through 1830 census
are incorrect by calling him white? Thanks for any input. Shelley
