This is a peculiar and complex question, and I am hoping that someone might
have more ideas
about it than I do.
When my grandfather died in Guernsey Co., Ohio in 1967, among his family
papers was an official
certification, from the Clerk of Courts of Kanawha Co., VA (now WV), of a
marriage between a
"Joseph Lians" to a "Sarah Cottral" 24 Jan 1840. A few years back I was at
the courthouse in
Vinton Co., OH looking at the estate file of my ggg-grandfather John Sines
b. VA ca. 1789 d.
Vinton Co. 1864 and found a handwritten slip of paper in the file recording
the same marriage but
with a slightly different date. (The date of the Kanawha Co. certificate is
May 15, 1857.)
So far as I am aware there is no connection between my family and the Lyons
and Cottrill families.
The only reason I could think of that this marriage record might have been
included in my ggg-
grandfather's estate file was that one of the parties to the marriage was
actually an illegitimate
child of John Sines. Can anyone think of any other reason? (I should add
that there was no
estate worthy anyone making trouble over.)
Any thoughts will be much appreciated.
Sharon (Siens)
Peery
