Dear Sherman,
YES! My great-uncles and maternal great-grandfather fought with the Ninth
(the "Bloody Ninth") VA cavalry and the 40th VA Infantry in the Civil War and
they did not have slaves (their father had "frittered" them all away!). I
feel that Dixie and the Stars and Bars represent a bit of our nation's history
which should not be forgotten just as the sacrifices of our forefathers in the
American Revolution should not be. Just as it is now recognized that Vietnam
was a mistake, we should not forget our history and it is our respect for
historical fact and accuracy that should be paramount not any perceived affronts or
desire to "re-write".
As to your name- we had a great historical/archaeological researcher here
in the Northern Neck named Virginia Sherman. When she visited Atlanta, GA,
she always took cash because she did not want Georgians to have this indication
that her name was Sherman which would have been the case if she used her
credit card. Bill McCarty
