Good for you, Ms. Bruce. I hope more folks take your advice; there are gen. societies and libraries everyWHERE, and archives for EVERY state, all of which provide services noWHERE else to be found. Paul

Why not send all Bible records (they are on-line) to the Library of
Virginia, they will also accept a genealogy print-out to help identify those
in the Bible and it will be kept with the Bible record and posted on-line.
Send your Bible records and GEDCOM file to the local Historical and/or
Genealogy Society or library where your ancestors lived. After all they are
the ones that could probably add the most to it and get the most from it.
I collect GEDCOM files and Bible records for Southampton, Isle of Wight and
Nansemond counties and the cities of Suffolk and Franklin, Va. and use them
to identify people buried in our local cemeteries that I've copied with the
help of friends. The cemeteries are posted on-line.
As Paul says you have to look at the "where" of your ancestors so share with
  your "where" area!!!

Only about 5% of your genealogy information is on-line.
As for the Library of Virginia, the newspaper project is available thru
  inter-library loan.
The Historical Society of Virginia will do some look-ups and email things
  that can be scanned.
Instead of complianing about what they won't do, perhaps you should find out
  what they will do.
That applies to the "where" historical and/or genealogy societies, the UDC,
the DAR, the SCV, the SAR, LVA, Hist.Soc of Va., Masons, Woodman of the
World, Amer.Legion, and many other organization and clubs Etc.
I have lists and more lists of books, articles, booklets, obits, pictures,
annuals, available in my locality that are not available on-line. We also
have 3 websites with a wealth of information that is not connected to
  Ancestry, or Gen-web.
Paul will also tell you if you're searching on the internet only, you're
missing 95% of your family history.

Quite a few areas have Yahoo Group Sites made for the "local area" and
researchers interested in that area. You can post your GEDCOM file there
  also.
  I hope this helps someone.
  Bruce

  Subject: A Question

  Hello, all.

I've been a VA roots list member for a number of years and I have been
trying, off and on, to gather as much information as I can about my
  ancestors amidst
life's demands. In light of the past few emails about posting information,
  do
any of you recommend a web database where I can post the information I have
gathered so far in hope of finding a match? I feel strongly about sharing
freely, while I would like credit for my research and give credit too, and
  would
like the information to be easily accessible. Do you think I should get a
  website of my own?

In the past, I have posted on genforum and sent a handful of emails to this
list but I have not made any valuable connections in a while.
  Thanks,
  Lynda (Harris) Lilly
