"Chronicling America" which is part of the Library of Congress (and may be
accessed through the LoV site) is a project where old newspapers across the
United States are being scanned in their entirety for access by the general
public for free. All newspapers have not been scanned as of yet but I will
say very old newspapers for Virginia are there. Check it out. There is a
search engine that isn't the most friendly, however there is online help
should you get stuck.
